Selected from thousands of nominations, Lisa Kelly and Ute Steenkamp, teachers at The Gateway Academy have been honoured as two of 102 Pearson National Teaching Silver Award winners across the country.

It is a tremendous achievement for both members of staff and symbolic of their hard work and commitment to the young people within their care.  Lisa Kelly, Director of Maths and Science at the Academy works tirelessly to create a challenging, nurturing environment for her students and ensures her lessons are exceptional.  Her ability to motivate both staff and students and her relentless pursuit to ensure students make exceptional progress is highly motivational.  Her greatest legacy is her ability to inspire students to continue on to study Maths at University level.  It is quite astonishing how many of Lisa’s former students have gone on to become teachers; not only does Lisa inspire the next generation of teachers, she also ensures that young people want to give back to their community.

Ute Steenkamp, Progress Leader and English Teacher at The Gateway Academy is undoubtedly one of the most passionate, fun and inspiring teachers of our generation.  She works relentlessly hard both within her own classroom and around The Gateway Academy to create a nurturing environment which is caring, yet challenging, to ensure that all students are developing as high achieving and fulfilled members of society.  In addition to being an outstanding teacher, Ute always has time for every student whatever their problem – large or small, teaching related or not.  Ute regularly collects for the local food bank, sends messages to the local care centres and arranges themed community events for students.

Lisa Kelly and Ute Steenkamp have both now been shortlisted to win one of just 15 Gold Awards later in the year, in a programme which will be broadcast on the BBC.  This is a great opportunity to celebrate the exceptional school staff who have worked wonders during an incredibly challenging time not only here at The Gateway Academy but throughout the UK.

The Pearson National Teaching Awards is an annual celebration of excellence in education, founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they work with.  This year marks its 22nd year of celebrating award-winning teachers, teaching assistants, headteachers and lecturers across the UK.
