GCSE Results August 2019

Gateway’s Top Performing Student Achieves Grade 9 in 9 Subjects.

The Gateway Academy has proven that its pupils can compete with the best in the UK as a record number achieved the top, Grade 9 at GCSE.   The Gateway Grammar Stream, introduced 5 years ago, when these pupils were in Year 7, has provided the necessary support and stimulus to ensure that more-able students achieve in-line with their potential.  This year’s top performing student Abiaz Afzal [pictured below] achieved Grade 9 in each of the 9 subjects on his curriculum. He is now hoping to gain a place at the London Academy of Excellence in Stratford before studying medicine at University.   The top 14 students between them achieved 40 Grade 9 qualifications along with 43 Grade 8s.

Gateway’s Head of school, Grainne McLaughlin said ‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Year 11 cohort from 2019 for their contribution to our academy. We are so proud of each and every one of them’.  She praised the achievements of the more-able asking ‘why would anyone travel miles to the nearest Grammar School when it is clear that they can do just as well, and sometimes better, at a local school?’   Mrs McLaughlin went on to say ‘we as an academy continue to be highly inclusive and do not select our intake on prior attainment.  We strive for all of our students to be successful and will continue to offer a broad and balanced curriculum.  Should a student aspire to be a lawyer, doctor, builder, actor, artist etc, we have some of the most dedicated teachers to help them achieve their goals.

The 2019 GCSE results for all students are in-line with the academy’s expectations  and maintain the high standards of academic success that academy expects.  Overall, 55% of Year 11 students achieved the Government’s benchmark ‘basics’ standard of a Grade 4 [or better] in both English and Mathematics.  This year’s results  continue to demonstrate the academy’s strength across the curriculum, with 87% of entrants achieving a Grade 4 [or higher] in Spanish; 94% in Photography; 64% in Psychology; 46% in Engineering; 58% in Science; 75% in drama; 92% in Dance; 73% in Art and 100% in Food Technology

The Academy is confident that overall students’ progress [the government’s measure for the national performance tables] will be well above the National Average across all subjects when the validated figures are released later in the term.

Cllr James Halden, Thurrock’s Cabinet Member for Education and Health visited Gateway as the students opened their results envelopes and said, “It was an honour to visit Gateway this morning and give some of the students their results to open. Talking to students about their aspirations for the future has been inspiring. It was wonderful to see the support of parents, carers and extended family too this morning. The students have achieved some amazing results and everybody should be proud.”

The Gateway Learning Community Trusts’ CEO, Kevin Sadler, said, ‘I am delighted with this set of results which continue to reflect the amazing work of Gateway’s Head, Grainne Mc Laughlin and her team. These results come at the end of an outstanding year for the Gateway Academy which was praised by Ofsted and rated good in every category as well as being recently re-accredited with the highly prestigious IQM [Inclusion Quality Mark]’ as a centre of excellence.
