Year 8 Essex Plate Champions

On Wednesday 17th October Matt Clark and Jamie Impey took the Year 8 Rugby team to New Hall School to compete in the Essex Plate Finals day.

Year 8 competed in a pool of 3 where, after results, you would play the corresponding team from the other pool with the 2 winning teams playing in the Plate Final. We beat St Clere’s 15-5 in our first match with tries from Zak De Breuk and Bobby Farrer (2). We then played against Roding Valley School who, from their game against St Clere’s, looked very well drilled but our size dominated them on the pitch and we came out 35-0 winners. Tries from Bobby Farrer, Ethan Cook, Lewis Squelch, Zak De Breuk (2), Abou Diakite (2). These results gave us top spot in the pool and went in to the Plate Final vs Harris Rainham.

Harris matched us for size and went 10-0 up in the first half with our poorest half of rugby all season. The second half was a different nature with the comeback started by Mitch Lilley to make it 10-5 and then Bobby Farrer making it tries in every match for 10-10. The game finished a draw and it was agreed to play until the next team scored and as the team in the ascendancy it only looked like one winner. Zak De Breuk was through down the wing before being shoulder charged in to touch and given a dead leg. As Jamie was ready to make a sub, a teary Zak got off the floor to re-join his team on the pitch, albeit limping. But within 2 minutes he had the ball played out to him again and in similar fashion he broke the line, down the wing and this time he wasn’t stopped to make it 15-10 to Gateway
