Student Leadership share songs and stories with their elders...

The Student Leadership Team recently made an extra special visit to a residential care home, Centenary Place in Southend-on-Sea, all in aid of a nationwide charity event called ’Donate 1 Million Minutes’ on Age UK day.

Often, older people in our communities are left alone for a very long time, and without any social interaction their lives can become very destitute. The Donate 1 Million Minutes initiative encourages young people to go out into their communities and spend time with the older generation.

In the case of the Student Leadership Team from the Gateway Academy, they spent the day handing out tea, coffee and cakes, as well as having lots of conversations about work, past experiences, memories and school.

Student Leadership Coordinator, Miss Rachel O’Dwyer, said “There was a fantastic atmosphere between old and young, and we were invited back as soon as we wish to visit! We even had students stand up and sing to the residents, making it an extremely enjoyable experience for all. The residents very kindly donated £60 to our cause of Age UK!”
