Bake Off at Gateway; GRAND FINALE WINNERS NOW UP!...

Staff and students from the Gateway Academy have now hung up their aprons after competing in the hotly contested annual Bake-Off competition. This year for the first time, students had their own section too!

The competition started with the cupcake round and then progressed onto sponge, tray bake, cheesecake and sweet pastry. The top two from each week were awarded points for their college and entered into the final Show Stopper round which had the theme of The Best of British.

Judging was proving to be more and more difficult every week and the finale welcomed guest judge Mr Neil Speight, Editor of the Thurrock Independent, along to enjoy the culinary delights! Neil commented, “I am extremely grateful to have been asked to attend the Bake-Off Finale and not just see the wonderful cakes but get to taste them. There were some exceptional and imaginative creations made with terrific skill that reflect great credit on the students and, to be fair, lots of imagination and humour from the teachers too. A really wonderful event. Can I come back next year please?”

Competition organiser, Mrs Debbie Spriggs, said “I have absolutely loved being a part of this competition, it has been my guilty pleasure, particularly as this year we invited the students to take part.  The weekly heats were restricted to ten entrants but this was exceeded at every stage.  I am amazed how many talented bakers we have here at the Gateway Academy.  I would like to say a big thank you to everyone that took time out to bake and make it the great success that it was.”

Winner of the staff section was Mrs Sam Walsh (Phoenix College Lead Coach) and the student section was Year 7 student, Jayden.

Head of School, Mrs Grainne McLaughlin, said “It was tremendous to see the wonderful cakes produced by our staff and students.  The creativity, skill, hard work and love of baking was clearly evident throughout the Gateway Bake-Off heats, as well as the Grand Finale and in my own opinion, of a much higher quality than the Great British Bake-Off! Well done to all of the staff and students involved and a particular thank you to the parents/carers for supporting this event.”
