Beyond Expectations for Gateway Academy students...

Students from the Gateway Academy were recently entered into Thurrock’s Next Top Boss competition once again, with amazing results!

The Green Challenge was to devise an interpretation for the regeneration of Davy Down Nature reserve and Pump House. The budget to work from was £10,000 for the reserve and £50,000 for the pump house. The team named themselves ‘Beyond Expectations’ and the students were part of the Student Leadership Team. They met at lunch and after school to put together their proposal and presentation video.

For the Business Challenge, the team were lucky enough to be partnered with Cruise and Maritime (C & M) and had to prepare a proposal for the launch of their new ship, Columbus. This involved a fabulous visit to one of the ships and support from staff at C & M. The students worked extremely hard, with enthusiasm and determination. At the Next Top Boss awards evening, the team were thrilled to win the Green Challenge and were runners up in the Business Challenge, resulting in a spectacular prize of £500!

The team are now meeting with Essex and Suffolk Water at Davy Down for talks on how they can put our Business Challenge ideas into practice.

Business teacher, Mrs Heidi Zeffie, said “This is an amazing opportunity for our students to work with real businesses and to see their ideas come to life. The students were a credit to the Gateway Academy and I am so very proud of their achievements.”

Head of School, Miss Grainne McLaughlin, also commented “This was a well-deserved award for our students who were excellent on the day and proved the importance of learning skills beyond the classroom.”
