Dear Student

It gives me the greatest pleasure to welcome you to The Gateway Academy.  I am delighted that you have chosen us for your secondary school.  Of course, I believe that you have made the right choice and I sincerely hope that you will be happy with us and work extremely hard to make a positive contribution to Academy Life.

Our Current Year 7 students have had a remarkable year so far and have settled into life at The Gateway with ease.  It is fantastic to see our Year 7 students continue to excel.  Part of the reason they are so successful is because their literacy and numeracy are of a very high standard.  Please use the opportunity in the coming months to read as much as possible.  This will greatly benefit you, when you join us at The Gateway Academy, otherwise you will find it difficult to access the full curriculum at our Academy.

The five years that you will spend with us will provide a foundation for your future.  We are very proud of all of our students and it is fantastic that so many go on to further education, training and employment.  Previous students have continued beyond The Gateway Academy to become actors, lawyers, sports people, teachers, musicians, doctors, entrepreneurs and so on.

One of our key aims at The Gateway Academy is to “Improve Upon Our Best”.  It is expected that you will put the maximum effort into your studies, reflect and improve on the feedback given by the staff and “Improve Upon Your Best.”  Do always try your best in whatever you do.

Every day I ask myself “what will I do today to make The Gateway Academy an even better school?”  I have even got it on my wall!  I would ask that you ask yourself the same question, even before your official start.  “What will I do today to make The Gateway Academy an even better school?”  It might be a small kindness to a friend or teacher; a fantastic piece of work, or even a suggestion to the Academy’s Leadership Team.  You are now an important part of The Gateway Academy.  You will help to make it what it is!

We have high standards at The Gateway Academy and regularly reward our students for doing the right thing.  Above all we want you to enjoy school and to be a successful learner.  Do not forget, if ever you need help or have a worry then please do not be afraid to ask someone - either your tutor, a fellow student, your Head of Year, another member of staff that you think will be able to help you, or even me.  I look forward to meeting you at our induction days and when you start in September.

A brief note for your parents: -

Please can I ask that you complete the New Entrants Form online and return this to our Admissions Officer, Ms O'Dwyer, via email at ga.admissions@theglc.org.uk.  Alternatively, please download, print, complete and return this form to Ms O’Dwyer.  This document needs to be returned as soon as possible, by Friday 15 May 2020 at the very latest.  You may also wish to download, read and keep the Academy’s prospectus.  With regards to uniform, (please see the Academy’s Uniform Purchase Form) you will see this year that we are offering staggered sessions for uniform as follows:

  • Monday 15 June “A” to “L”
  • Tuesday 16 June “M” to “Z”

Both of these sessions will commence at 3.00 pm and end at 5.00 pm

If you are unable to attend the above dates, we have a further uniform session on Thursday 02 July 2020 from 3.00 pm until 5.00 pm.

ALL uniform orders are available for collection during the last week of the Summer Holidays (i.e. Tuesday 25 August to Friday 28 August 2020 from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm).  Please be aware that we will require full payment for your child’s uniform when you purchase it.  Payment can be made in the form of cash or credit card on the night.  The deadline for all uniform orders is Friday 03 July 2020.

I would also ask that you to read through the Academy’s Code of Conduct with your child.  It is important that both you and your child understand the Code of Conduct and that you act as an advocate at all times for it.

A date for your diaries, we are holding our Students” and Parents” induction evening on Thursday 02 July 2020 from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm.  It is expected that you attend this session and play an active role in your child’s secondary education and experience.  We believe that positive relationships between parents/carers, their child and the staff of the Academy is of utmost importance.

Should you have any questions with regards to the above information, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Smith, regarding school uniform or Ms O’Dwyer concerning the New Entrants Form on 01375 489000.

Details of this letter, together with a very large quantity of information can be found on the Academy’s website.  Please feel free to visit the Academy’s website regularly for updates.

Best wishes,

Yours sincerely

Mrs G McLaughlin
