220 students from the Gateway Academy recently took part in the Academy’s annual ‘Gateway Games’ at Blackshots Athletics Track. Students from Years 7 to 10 took part, along with the help from some of the Academy’s talented Year 11 GCSE students, who were there to ensure that the day to ran smoothly and without a hitch.

Competing in both track and field events, students had been selected based on their first two weeks of PE lessons in all events and the top 6-8 from each year group competed, scoring points based on the English School’s Athletics scoring system. They were also competing to beat records set from last year’s inaugural games.

In total, 89 events were completed and over 40 records broken, some of which have the chance of standing for a very long time. Points accumulated by the students were added together to find our ‘Victor Ludorum’ and ‘Victrix Ludorum’ which translates to ‘Winner of the games’ in both make and female categories.

Head of PE, Mrs Abbey Shannon, said “It was a very close run competition with the girls, but the boys were the stand-out winners, after competing in 10 events of a possible 12 throughout the day. Winners will be announced at our annual Sports Awards Evening in July. The PE department would like to thank staff members who helped with the running of the day over at the track by either taking on the support of an event or by helping to man the students while they waited for their events.”
