The Academy has been designated as a specialist school for both the Arts and Engineering. This celebrates the quality of opportunity that exists in both areas and reflects how these two curricular areas impact on the ethos and standards across the Academy.
The arts are at the centre of the Academy’s drive to develop the self-esteem and confidence of all young people. In each of the arts disciplines - music, dance, drama and the visual arts - students are encouraged to express themselves through a wide range of media. They learn about the diverse nature of our multi-cultural society and develop the skills knowledge and understanding necessary to create their own works of art.
There is a wide range of extra-curricular clubs and activities that all students are encouraged to attend, from the gospel choir and steel pan group to drama and pottery classes. There are theatre trips and our own performances that provide opportunities for students to make friends, widen their life-experiences and develop their talents.
Engineering has defined the world in which we live and is an essential component in ensuring that the UK continues to innovate to create wealth. Students at The Gateway Academy have access to state-of-the-art facilities to help create the civil-engineers and architects of the future. The Academy is at the heart of developing the new Engineering Diploma that will provide new opportunities for young people who aspire to a career in engineering. Working with RWEnpower, The Ford Motor Company and the University of East London, the Academy will offer high quality vocational opportunities for its own young people and for those throughout Thurrock.
